Simple-Endoscopic-Tasks Box (SET-Box)
An open-access, 3D-printable endoscopy trainer for initial endoscopic exposure and fostering early interest in gastroenterology
The Simple Endoscopic Tasks Box (SET-Box) is a collaborative project between the Department of Internal Medicine I and the Dorothea Erxleben Learning Center, led by Jakob Garbe.
Motivation and Aim
Endoscopy is frequently cited as a primary motivating factor in the decision to pursue a career in gastroenterology. Early exposure to this cornerstone of the specialty therefore appears highly beneficial. However, the integration of hands-on endoscopy into the medical curriculum is typically limited: high personnel requirements, the risk of equipment damage, and prolonged individual interaction times with established endoscopy trainers hinder routine implementation. To date, no specialized trainers for initial endoscopic exposure are available—a missed opportunity in light of the growing shortage of future gastroenterologists.
We aimed to develop a trainer focused on short interaction times, minimal supervision requirements, and rapid positive reinforcement, designed for implementation in medical education to stimulate interest in gastroenterology.
The Simple Endoscopic Tasks Box
In an iterative process, a trainer comprising seven tasks of varying complexity was developed (see Video above). The tasks were tested in educational settings and adapted until predictable interaction times and reliable success rates were achieved.
An accompanying website integrates animated instructions, which reduce supervision requirements, alongside gamification elements such as high scores and various game modes. The SET-Box can be manufactured using a 3D printer; all source data and documentation are freely accessible.
Below the reader will find all information necessary to reproduce the SET-Box and use it teaching. In case of questions and suggestions email jakob.garbe☉uk-halle.de
